Teacher & Army Veteran Inspires Global Movement
Denver, Colorado — In an extraordinary display of dedication to fostering compassion and unity, Onyx Mara Bird, a seasoned educator with more than two decades of teaching experience, is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to build Kindness Communities.
After years of nurturing young minds in the classroom, Onyx is channeling her passion for education and community into a transformative project that transcends geographical boundaries. Recognizing the need for genuine connection in today’s disconnected world, she is rallying families in her local neighborhoods and reaching out to communities worldwide through an innovative online platform — purposed toward building stronger local and in-person resourcing.
Kindness Communities, Ms. Bird's brainchild originally hosted by her project space at Onyx Bird Media, is a heartwarming initiative designed to create environments where families can come together to learn and foster kindness and care. With a mission to weave a tapestry of goodwill that spans continents, Ms. Bird is leveraging her extensive teaching experience to provide resources, guidance, and a sense of belonging to families seeking to build and nurture kindness in their lives.
Onyx brings a unique perspective to the Kindness Communities initiative, being a proud veteran from her time in service to our country. Ms. Bird underscores the importance of including veterans in family-oriented activities.
Integrating veterans into Kindness Communities not only provides a meaningful way to express gratitude for their service but also creates an inclusive space where diverse experiences contribute to the rich landscape of shared stories.
"Our work in Kindness Communities is particularly focused on providing support and opportunities to all families in our communities, especially to families of color and those experiencing trauma or disability, and always including individuals in need of family," Ms. Bird writes. "We are building to revitalize intersectionally-affected families and communities through collaborative reparations in ways that make everyone's lives better, stronger, and healthier."
Inspired by the belief that kindness knows no boundaries, Onyx Bird Media invites families and individuals from all walks of life to join the movement. The online platform serves as a hub for like-minded participants globally, allowing them to share experiences, exchange ideas, and collectively build Kindness Communities in their respective corners of the world.
In a world where digital connections often replace genuine human interactions, Onyx emphasizes the importance of fostering relationships within local neighborhoods. The Kindness Communities initiative encourages families to organize family-friendly events, activities, and projects that promote kindness, ultimately creating a ripple effect that extends beyond borders.
Children and families — as well as participating adults, elders, businesses and organizations from the community — get to experience shared dreaming and building together.
"I've witnessed the power of kindness in developing young minds throughout my teaching career. Now, I want to extend that impact beyond the classroom and create communities where kindness is not just an abstract value but a way of life," says Ms. Bird.
The inaugural activities for Kindness Communities began this year in 2023, encouraging participants to practice learning and dreaming out loud together using Internet platforms, primarily on Telegram messenger and Substack, as a bridge to planning and establishing local in-person community activities.
"Each day we say a dream we have for a community learning activity that happens in a local space we want to nourish," Onyx tells us. "Then we imagine how we can do a version of that activity online from anywhere on the globe, while we are gathering the resources to hold a more developed form of that activity in our local community spaces.”
Through Onyx Bird's leadership, Kindness Communities aims to bridge the gap between community members with a wide variety of lived experiences, fostering connections that strengthen the social fabric of our neighborhoods and enrich the lives of all community members.
With the launch of Kindness Communities, Onyx envisions a global network of interconnected neighborhoods, united by the common goal of raising excitement about learning together, spreading compassion, and making a positive difference in one another’s lives.
